Darwin carpet python
Morelia spilota variegataThe 'top end' or 'Darwin' carpet python - one of seven subspecies of the carpet python, is one of the most common python species in captivity. This medium-sized python (to 1.8m) is a fast grower that usually starts out on the snappy side, but in time generally becomes quite confident and easy-going, and amenable to handling. Darwin carpets definitely make a good choice of snake species for the entire family, if the sight of human blood can be tolerated during the acclimatisation period. It is a very attractive subspecies that is highly variable in colouration. It is quite arboreal and should be provided with an enclosure with an appropriate elevated perch. The Snake Ranch line of albino Darwin carpet pythons include a genetic blend of both the 'Blondie' line and the 'Phoenix' line - derived from two different wild caught albinos, and appear to be much calmer than 'normal' Darwins and in our unabashed opinion, more attractive than most albino Darwins available elsewhere. |
